About the Book

Fall of Thrones and Thorns
Jennifer Ellision
(Threats of Sky and Sea #3)
Publication date: September 27th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
War hurtles in, a typhoon over the sea.
After Bree’s life was torn apart, Nereidium had represented a haven to her. A place that—if she could save it—was beyond the King’s reach.
And, at last, she’s arrived upon its shores. But things in Nereidium are not what they should be.
The land is plagued by a rash of mysterious earthquakes, the likes of which it’s never known. The governors are distracted by old traditions, while Bree and her friends grapple with changing identities and the sense that the longer they wait to take action… the greater the danger from Egria grows.
Bree is tired of living under the shadow of King Langdon’s power. And she’s tired of waiting for him to be the first to act.
In this final chapter of the Threats of Sky and Sea series, it all comes down to Nereidium or Egria. To Bree or the King. It’s kill… or be killed.
And not everyone will escape the battle unscathed.

My Reviews

First, I need to say that the covers for this series are absolutely gorgeous so kudos to whoever designed them…

Now for my thoughts on the books in this series (and I am doing my best not to include spoilers…which is so hard to do because they are so good)…

Threats of Sky and Sea (Book 1)

20498423This fascinating fantasy series gets off to a fabulous start with Threats of Sky and Sea.  Breena Perdit lived an ordinary life as a barmaid in her Da’s tavern until the day she witnessed three of the King’s Elementals in the woods near her home. Now everything has changed as she learns of her father’s secret past and is taken into custody.  This feisty heroine also discovers quite a bit about herself and her own abilities as she adjusts to life in the castle.  Conspiring with new acquaintances, which include Caden, the Prince and son of the King, Bree tries to earn her and her father’s freedom and discover what the evil King is up to as the threat of a war becomes closer to a reality.

Everything about this book is so entertaining.  From our fiesty main character, from whose point of view we get to experience everything, to the whole concept of the Elementals, beings who can control one of the four major elements:  Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.  I’ll admit at first it was a little confusing, but as the story continued and more things were revealed, it began to make sense and I became lost in the story.  It does end with a cliffhanger though so you are going to want to make sure you have the next book in the series so you can continue the journey with Bree and the other fascinating characters.

My Rating: 4 ½ Stars

Riot of Storm and Smoke (Book 2)

Beautiful woman with katana isolated on the white backgroundRiot of Storm and Smoke picks up exactly where book 1 left off as if they were really one book rather than two.  In this installment, Bree and her allies are on the run trying to get to safety as the King searches for them.  We get both the point of view of Bree and Caden, the King’s son, which I found interesting since Threats of Sky and Sea focused on Bree’s POV.  Bree is haunted by the events from the previous book, yet continues to remain strong and determined.  Caden also must face the consequences of his actions as her gathers allies to help bring down his father.

In Riot of Storm and Smoke, we also get to meet some new and intriguing characters that help the group on their journey.  I was thrilled to see such strong female characters portrayed in this story, including Bree and Aleta, Caden’s former betrothed, from the first book as well as a couple of new characters.  It was nice to read about independent female characters who are perfectly capable of saving themselves.

As with the first book in the series, Threats of Sky and Sea, this book once again ends on a MAJOR cliffhanger…even more so than the first book.  I was really glad that I had the next book already lined up to read so I was able to continue the story immediately.  I would definitely recommend reading this series in order as the books read as if they were one big book broken into separate parts.

Fall of Thrones and Thorns (Book 3)

As with the previous book in the series, Fall of Thrones and Thorns picks up where the previous book left off as we learn more about Bree and her newfound abilities and location.  Bree and her allies have sought refuge and assistance on the island of the King’s enemies.  There they must make adjustments to their new surrounding and knowledge they gain as they prepare themselves for the epic battle to come.  And what a battle it was…the showdown between the protagonists and their enemies was everything I had hoped it would be and more.  It contained acts of sacrifice and heroism as well as few unexpected elements that really tied the three books together.

With this book we also get to meet a few new characters as well as get the point of view of multiple characters, which is something I enjoyed and thought added to this installment in the series.  Aleta, Caden’s former betrothed, was one of the new POVs and I am really glad it was saved for this book. Considering the revelations in this story, it felt appropriate and satisfying to get Aleta’s reactions since some of them affected her.  It was nice to see the thoughts and perceptions of someone outside of Bree and Caden and to get to know other characters a bit better.

Fall of Thrones and Thorns was an exciting and wonderful conclusion to the series, but I can’t help to wish for more.  While there is no big cliffhanger, I want to know what happens next for our characters considering all of the changes that have happened in their lives over the course of the series.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this series to fans of fantasy.  You MUST read them in order to get the full effect of the stories as the three books really read as one long story split into 3 parts.  If you are like me, you might even binge read them all in one day (yep, this is what I did) because you are impatient to see what happens next.  The series was so entertaining with its touches of wit, intrigue, magic, and more and included plenty of drama, strong characters, and a fascinating plot, which are all things I enjoy in fantasy books and, well to be honest, other books as well.  I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by Jennifer Ellision whether they are part of this series or not.

My Rating: 4 ½
