My Review

Title: Carmine
Author:  Alan Janney
Format: Digital ARC
Source: Blog Tour

Set in a not-so-distant future where society has begun to crumble, this dystopian story gets off to a fascinating start.  The year is 2019 and just like the main character, Carmine, at first we aren't entirely sure what exactly is going on as the book opens with her waking up alone in an abandoned Walmart with no memory of how she got there.

What she does eventually figure out, with a little assistance from a stranger, is that she is different...made so by someone who experimented on her and others. These other "mutants," or Variants (a term she prefers), are drawn to Carmine and as she makes her way to the city she picks up several along the way.  Soon she becomes a leader of a large community of Variants and others but she still struggles with her memories and what was done to her not to mention the pressure that comes with leading.

This was a fascinating story, but at times I felt as lost as Carmine and unsure of exactly what was happening. Nevertheless, the book managed to entertain me as I wondered what would be revealed next. And there was a lot to be revealed! There are so many unexpected revelations as Carmine begins to discover her true identity and what that might mean for her and the new life she has started. Plus all of the stuff she and the others go through trying to run their community and keep it safe.

The story gets off to an interesting start and then drags a bit in the middle, but makes up for it with a exciting ending. And I can't wait to see what's in store for our characters in the next book. I like how we are slowly fed information rather than getting one major info dump. My need to know more about this world and inhabitants is what kept me reading. The strong characters and what they've been through is fascinating. And the fact that this is just a few short years in the future is even more alarming and adds to the realness of the book.  However, I had so many questions and there were so many characters to keep track of...especially after the first time jump between parts one and part two.

Nevertheless, this was an entertaining story featuring a strong female character and intriguing concept that I am glad I had a chance to read.

My Rating: 3 1/2 Stars
